The song is about the Dutch Mata Hari. Her fame as a dancer spread the width and breadth of Europe as she enthralled audiences with her sultry show. Members of royalty as well as political and militairy leaders vied for her attention. In a world torn by war, she was showered with gifts and entrusted with secrets, swiftly becoming a highly paid, very dangerous courtesan. It remains unclear whether she was or was not a real spy. Regardless, she was sentenced to death for espionage. The light of this captivating lady of intrigue was extinguished by a firing squad on October 15, 1917.
