For seven years now, Elimu has been spreading hope among learners in correctional and rescue facilities in Malindi through the Mobile Digital Reading Program.
Elimu’s Mobile Digital Reading Program targets learners in correctional facilities in Malindi who would otherwise have no access to education in these circumstances. We take e-textbooks and video tutorials to learners in a local prison (20–65-year-olds), Junior Remand Centre (10–17-year-olds) and girls’ rescue home (3-17-year-olds).
Being incarcerated, or held in a rescue home for an unknown period leaves many young people and adults, with a nagging despondency. As they battle with the tough circumstances surrounding their lives, they desperately need something to give them some hope for living.
Because of their backgrounds, many learners that we have worked with encounter education for the first time during their stay at these institutions, some are school drop outs, and most of them have never interacted with digital devises to study.
In these highly vulnerable settings, learners can continue their studies during their incarceration—bringing some normalcy to the experience and giving hope of a better future outside. In the past years, we have seen over 50 learners sign up for national exams, and continue to high school.
