India census: Half of homes have phones but no toilets
According to a 2012 joint UNICEF and World Health Organization
report, 36 per cent of the national population, or 477 million
Chinese, have no access to safe toilets.
Despite the large number of people without safe sanitation,
China has made significant progress in improving rural sanitation
services in recent years. In 1990 less than a quarter of China's
population had access to safe sanitation.
“School children in China are badly in need to sanitary latrines.
The problem is especially difficult for girls, as they often avoid
going to school during their menstrual period,” Yang said.
A 2007 national survey by Chinese Centre for Disease Control
and Prevention showed that only 24% of schools had sanitary latrines.

Three years into its “toilet revolution” and China has built or
upgraded tens of thousands of facilities at tourists sites
across the country.
But there are still thousands more to go in the next couple of
years as authorities try to improve public sanitation and clean
up the country’s international reputation.
According to official figures, roughly three-quarters of the
country had acceptable toilets in 2014 – up from 7.5 per cent
in 1993 but still a long way to go.
What has been done?
China built or refurbished about 68,000 toilets at tourist
sites across the country since 2015. Another 64,000 are
expected to be built by 2020, under a national culture
and tourism plan released late last year.
