In Spain, the owner of any motorcycle or car is required to have liability insurance. This policy covers damages that may be caused to third parties while driving, whether physical or to their property. How can we find out if a vehicle is properly insured? The Insurance Compensation Consortium is a public entity that, among other things, manages the Information File of Insured Vehicles. This is a file in which insurers register all vehicles with valid insurance. The problem is that to consult this file, you must present a damage report for the vehicle in question. If the search is not due to a traffic accident, but for another reason, it will be difficult to obtain the information this way.
The DGT also offers a service to search for the most relevant data on each vehicle and is available to anyone with a legitimate and direct interest in knowing it. However, to find out if the vehicle you are interested in has valid insurance, you must request a detailed report. In that case, access to the information is not free; you must pay a fee of €8.67. To request the full report, you can go to the nearest Provincial Traffic Headquarters or do so through the Directorate General of Traffic's Online Office. For the latter, you need a digital certificate, an electronic DNI, or a Permanent Cl@ve. If you have any questions, you can go to an agency to process the procedure. The downside is that they charge administrative fees.
