Ex-Christian Musician REWRITES Famous Hymn "Amazing Grace"
Singer-songwriter Michael Gungor, who deconstructed his faith a few years ago, is now doing the church a favor (or so he thinks) by rewriting John Newton’s famous hymn “Amazing Grace.”
Gungor recently posted some of his revised lyrics on Instagram, adding the comment: “A Wretch like me?? No thanks.”
I guess Gungor didn’t like that part. And I can see why. It offends our modern sensibilities and flies in the face of the current cultural mantra: You are enough.
When John Newton calls himself a “wretch,” this isn’t meant to be an insult. It’s meant to be an accurate description of reality.
In Romans 7:24, Paul uses the word when he says, “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”
Jesus uses the same word in Revelation 3:17. He tells the Church in Laodicea, “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.”
Notice Jesus calls the lukewarm people in Laodicea “wretched” to describe their spiritual state. Now, we may say, “No thanks,” like Gungor, or we can say we don’t like it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not true.
