I've been observing Eastern Bluebirds for 15 years. This nest is their 3rd for the season. It takes approximately 2-1/2 weeks for hatchlings to fledge. While the weather was hotter and dryer than earlier in the year, insects were large and plentiful. These chicks were fed lots of cicada, katydids, and dragonflies. It was interesting to watch them swallow very large insects down their tiny beaks. Parents always patiently waited to make sure the chicks could swallow their food.
Eastern Bluebirds are extremely clean and do not reuse their nest, instead they build a new nest for each clutch of eggs laid. This pair of bluebirds built three nests this season, in total they raised 15 chicks this year.
