Jimmy Barnes awarded Honorary Doctorate
Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes has taken to the stage in the city that launched his career – not to belt out one of his famous tunes but to accept an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Australia.
In an emotional speech Barnes references his working class upbringing in Elizabeth, a tough family environment where fist fighting rather than scholastic achievements was applauded. A university education was the furthest thing from his mind.
Fifty years later, after an award-winning career, initially as lead singer with iconic rock band Cold Chisel and later as a solo performer, Barnes has overcome many personal battles. True to UniSA’s unstoppable nature, the global superstar has persevered, leaving a musical legacy that is hard to match.
