When I started singing I was surrounded by the most amazing singers and I so wanted to sound just like them but was insecure about how my voice tended to sound a bit more “rough around the edges.” When I first heard “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse, she had a similar roughness to her voice and she held up the example that singing was not about how you sounded but how you conveyed how you felt. Her raw sound empowered me to continue to sing and to sing songs that emotionally resonated with me. Amy has been a huge influence on how I sing and convey the emotionally arch of the songs I choose to sing.
