The Pointer is a short-haired pointing dog with a strong, dry build, lively and energetic.
When hunting, the Pointer always gallops quickly and energetically over any terrain, with a high, smooth stride. The Pointer always stands in a dramatic, tense stance with the tail extended horizontally or slightly curved. Crouching and crouching movements are unusual for this breed.
This breed was developed in England in the 18th century. The breed's source material was the smooth-coated Spanish and Italian "pointing" dogs, as well as the French "braques," also of Spanish and Italian origin.
The Pointer appeared in Russia primarily in the middle of the last century. Before the First World War, alongside the successful breeding of local Pointers, the breed in Russia was frequently enriched by the importation of outstanding specimens from England, France, Belgium, and Sweden.
In the Soviet Union, through selective breeding aimed at combining a perfect exterior with excellent field performance, the breed reached a very high level.
The breed's name derives from the English word "pointer," meaning "pointer" or "arrow," because the dog, upon spotting prey, stands and freezes, indicating to the hunter where the game is hidden.
The English Pointer is a powerful yet graceful and elegant dog. It is independent and easily trained. They possess strong hunting instincts, which become evident even in puppyhood.
In the past, Pointers were used to hunt hare alongside Greyhounds. Later, they began to be used for bird hunting. However, Pointers can be trained to hunt any game.
Pointers have an exceptional sense of smell and are extremely hardy in hot conditions, but are not suited for hunting in very cold climates. Pointers work better on land than in water.
Pointers are incredibly energetic dogs, tireless and active on the hunt, but calm and sweet at home. They give their all on the hunt, are hardworking, and do not shirk their work.
They make excellent watchdogs, but are always wary of strangers and react emotionally to suspicious objects.
Pointers require early socialization and frequent interaction with strangers to prevent potential shyness.
The English Pointer is independent and self-sufficient, gets along well with any pets, and is suitable for apartment living.
The Pointer's smooth coat should be brushed with a stiff brush and washed when necessary. You can wipe the coat with a chamois for a shinier finish.
After hunting, be sure to dry the dog, otherwise the Pointer may catch a cold. Clean its ears regularly to prevent infections.
If you're getting a Pointer for apartment living, provide it with long, active walks. Keep it on leash near cars. A trip into nature will be a real treat for a Pointer.
