In this Physics video lecture on electrostatics for in Hindi class 12 we explained the relation between electric field and electric potential. The relationship is very interesting. Electric field and electric potential are related as the vector E = - grad (V). Lets find out the meaning.
The rate of change in electric potential at a point with respect to distance is the electric field intensity at that point.
Mathematically,
dV/dr = - E
Electric Potential :-
The electric potential at a point is defined as the amount of work done in bringing a unit positive charge from infinity to that point.
It is a scalar quantity .
In S.I., its unit is volt (V) or joule coulomb-1 (J C-1).
Electric Field :-
The electric field due to a charge is the space around the charge , in which any other charge is acted upon by an electrostatic force.
In S.I., its unit is N C^(-1) or V m^(-1)
Electric Field Intensity :-
Electric field intensity at a point is defined as the force experienced by a unit positive charge placed at that point.
It is a vector quantity and is denoted by E ⃗.
E = [1/(4πε_0 )] . [ Q/r^2]
In vector notation
E ⃗ = [1/(4πε_0 )] . [ Q/r^3)] . r ⃗
