male is iridescent green copper and purple with small white patch on black cinnamon brown tail and speculate-tipped crest female has pale streaking on underparts, prominent white throat short crest and bright blue tip to tail.
voice A series of upward-inflected whistles, kur-leiu or kleeh-vick alternated with higher-pitched kleeh - kleeh,
loosely gregarious even in breeding season often three or four tougher.
Feeds mainly by digging with its strong bill and can dig deep in snow if necessary.
It is less shy than most Himalayan pheasant's and can often be seen in summer foraging in alpine pastures. steep grassy slopes and open rocky slopes above tree line in summer, descends to lower altitudes in rhododendron forest during winter, also at edges of forest and pastures, and in forest clearings.
