In September of 2013, Ubisoft Montréal received a massive 10 million dollar investment from the Québec government. Ubi would be far from the last local studio to receive financial support as Prime Minister Pauline Marois attempted to bolster Québec’s already flourishing video game industry. Video games weren’t the only thing on Marois’ mind though, as 20 days prior to making her announcement from Ubisoft's offices, she had been at the National Assembly to reveal something much more sinister: “La Charte”.

These conflicting initiatives led me (a Montréaler) to commit to a decade long boycott of all local Ubisoft games, including the famed Assassin’s Creed series. After finally breaking my streak though, I came to a realization about the nature of Montréal-based game studios; something unexpected and counterintuitive given the complexities of their locale. Why does Montréal, of all places, make the most “ethnic” video games?
