STORYLINE:
This year’s World Robot Conference in Beijing has kicked off with a line-up of humanoids, some scarily life-like.
Among them is Su Shi, one of China's greatest and most revered poets.
Known for its humanoid designs, EX Robots are displaying several new models including a family service robot on a moving wheel platform.
Looking just like a young woman, the robot is designed to be your chief servant at home – it can control all the smart home appliances as well as provide companionship to family members.
"Within a family, emotional exchanges and emotional support are very important. We need a vivid robot in our lives. It can provide service to us as a chief servant in the family. And no matter it’s elderly people that live alone, or some young people or children, they all long for the companion of such a robot,” says Li Boyang, founder and CEO of EX Robots, a robot company based in northeastern China’s Dalian.
Apart from making improvements to the robots’ facial expression and movements, Li says his team has this year integrated the robots’ hardware and artificial intelligence to allow the robots to react to different circumstances in real time.
Several hundred humanoids by EX Robots are already in use, and another 500 will be manufactured and put into use this year, according to Li.
Shenzhen-based tech company Astribot Co. Ltd. is showcasing its robot Astribot S1.
It's seen playing the traditional Chinese musical instrument Yangqin, and writing Chinese calligraphy. It can also perform martial arts.
In a promotional video by the company, the robot is also seen doing housework and preparing food.
