How Long Does HDPE Plastic Last? | Polly Products
At Polly Products, we use only 100% recycled HDPE plastic to create our outdoor furnishings. This is because HDPE, also known as high-density polyethylene—or plastic number 2—is one of the most environmentally friendly plastic materials available. It’s non-toxic, durable, long-lasting, and easy to maintain, and it can be recycled and reused repeatedly without breaking down and leaching toxins.
But how exactly is outdoor furniture made from recycled plastic, you ask?
Well, bales of milk jugs made of HDPE plastic from community recycling programs across the state of Michigan (where Polly Products is located) are shredded, cleaned, and dried. Once the containers of shredded or pelletized recycled plastic are brought to our facility, they are then melted and mixed with colorant and UV inhibitors and poured into molds. The components that come out of the molds are then refined and prepared to be assembled into various products, including benches, picnic tables, message centers, trash receptacles, planters, and more. We make every component of every product, right here in our Michigan facility.
Aside from the colorant, sunblock, and binding agents used, we keep our plastic recipe from the HDPE milk jugs as pure as possible to ensure that every product can be recycled and reused again at the end of its lifecycle. Furthermore, any scraps that are left over from our production operations are reground and put back in the mix with the rest of the plastic feedstock waiting to be melted down.
This entire process ensures we maintain a closed-loop manufacturing system that is as sustainable as possible. And we only use number 2 HDPE plastic because its strength and durability mean our products will last for years to come and stand the test of time.
