In this video we visit the village of Kam'yanka in eastern Ukraine, approximately 120km south-east of Kharkiv and only around 50km from the active front line.

Kam'yanka was occupied during the Russian invasion of Ukraine from April 2022 until September 2022, before Ukrainian forces liberated the area. What remains today is a stark reminder of the human cost of war.

Almost every building in the village suffered damage. Many homes were completely destroyed and residents told us that a large percentage of properties are beyond repair. During our visit we met local people searching through the remains of their homes, trying to recover possessions and memories from the rubble.

One resident explained that electricity had still not been restored and that local authorities required a significant proportion of residents to return before services could be reconnected. Looking around the village, it was difficult to imagine how that could happen given the scale of destruction.

Kam'yanka is just one village, but it represents a much larger story playing out across Ukraine. Hundreds of towns and villages have suffered similar damage, and some may never be rebuilt or repopulated.

This video is not about military operations or frontline action. It is about the aftermath of war and the impact on ordinary people whose homes and communities have been devastated.

The scenes shown here are real. The silence is real. The loss is real.
