Using the CLS, researchers from Kansas State University discovered why soils enhanced with manure or compost fertilizer store more carbon than soil treated with chemical fertilizer or no fertilizer. They found carbon was preserved in pores in the soil, with some attaching itself to minerals. As well, they showed that soil treated with manure or compost contained more microbial carbon, an indication that these enhancements support more microorganisms and their activities in the soil. Their findings can help inform more regenerative agriculture practices to protect soils and the environment – and help feed growing populations.
