This week’s demo is all about the image asset cropping in Genstyl. The tool is indeed typography-focused, but the link between copy and imagery is not something to be left as an afterthought.
You build structure through grids, type, and imagery, all complementing each other. Sometimes you need to resize, change aspect ratio, or use different crops of the same image in different areas. They’re all tied to the meaning you want to convey. Genstyl handles that without leaving the tool.
In the future, I’d like to be able to tweak the images a bit (contrast, saturation, etc.), so they would fit better with the colour palette or the visual design I’m after, without switching context to a different tool, but for the first version, knowing that I don’t have to manually crop the images seems like a solid start.
I had quite a bit of fun building this layout, even though I’m a bit rusty on the design side of things, but I find it’s the best way to find issues with the UX of the app, its limitations and apparently a bottomless bag of ideas for the future!
It also felt a bit weird not having a single CTA on the screen! Since it’s a magazine-inspired layout I guess you’d already have actioned by purchasing a copy! ;D
