Lifeguard Tower with impressionist sky - acrylics alcohol inks and oils on black and white photo
In this narrated tutorial I will show you the steps for adding an impressionist sky with acrylic paint, alcohol inks and Marshall Photo Oils on a black and white photo of a lifeguard tower at Torrey Pines State Beach in La Jolla, California.
I find these lifeguard towers in Southern California to be perfect subjects. I have taken photographs of many of them and worked on them in a variety of ways, including (selectively) hand coloring them and - as I show in this video - do something different with the sky in addition to the hand coloring.
The 30x20" photo was printed with a light jet on matte Fuji Crystal Archive Photo Paper.
I added several layers of acrylic paint and acrylic medium to the sky, and added alcohol inks mixed with isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) on top of the acrylic layers to give it an organic look. I blew the inks around with a straw.
I hand tinted (or hand colored) the bottom part of the image (ocean, tower and beach) with Marshall Photo Oils.

cotton swabs
eye tees (very pointy cotton swabs)
Marshall photo oils: Sky Blue, Chinese Blue, Burnt Sienna, Sepia, Cadmium Orange
Winsor and Newton Artist’s Gloss Varnish
In the end I frame the piece in a nice little barn wood frame.
