Verses about Psalm 46 - for Bart and Lize
This composition was created on the occasion of the wedding of my registrar Bart van der Tang. The music is highly ́constructed ́: modern counterpoint, canon and imitation techniques, whole-tone scales and so on. Music that you have to give the time and opportunity to ‘sit’ in your hearing. Luther’s ‘Ein feste Burg’ is quoted, as well as the melody of the Genevan Psalm 2, ‘Wat rijden de volken, wat bezielt ze toch...’ and the wonderful B-A-C-H motif. The text of this Psalm (according to Dr. Vreekamp ‘More topical than any news item...’) always formed the most important inspiration for the chosen forms, lines and harmonies.
