The Canadian (James Merritt)
The CSB featured the March “The Canadian” by James Merritt for our CSB56 Concert, at the request of Bandmaster John Lam for this, his retirement concert. This piece has been performed many times by the CSB over the years, and certainly through John’s tenure.
“The Canadian” is not your typical street march. Captain Eric Ball described the march in this way:
“Here is a piece that will constitute something of a challenge to our best bands, calling, as it does, for developed technique in most parts, control of dynamics, and sustaining power. While it is in March form, its nature is such that it will allow some imagination in interpretation, and is, of course, very much different from the ordinary 'street' March, and must be approached and taught with this in view.”
This march features “O Canada” part of the way through, with thin scoring, ensemble playing, and a few colouring effects. Many times, audiences will stand in respect of the anthem at this point, not realizing the anthem will occur later, after a technical interlude, with full scoring and technical prowess needed from the top of the cornet scoring down to the tubas.
“The Canadian” is a fun march to play, entertains audiences, and brings audiences to their feet in respect for the Canadian anthem.
