Man Just Built a Boat Without Nails—No Nails, No Screws!

There’s a guy from Indonesia who took DIY projects to the next level by building his own traditional boat—without using any nails or screws. This isn't just another weekend hobby; it's a full-on, old-school boat crafted with sweat, wood shavings, and a lot of patience.
He chose Marsolo wood for its durability, alongside redwood for the boat's base structure. Redwood, known for its resistance to rot and decay, was perfect for a boat that needed to be strong but not too heavy. The boat-building process is as intricate as it is impressive. Instead of modern hardware, he used extra-long wooden nails, connecting the redwood planks by drilling holes at odd angles and inserting sharpened wooden sticks, which looked like oversized toothpicks.
But it doesn’t stop there. He used thermo-flexible wood pieces, which can be bent into shape using heat or fire. This ancient technique, known as lignin welding, allows him to join the wood pieces together without any metal fasteners, much like traditional Japanese carpentry. As the hull of the boat slowly took shape, it became clear that this was a project requiring not just skill but a zen-like level of patience.
However, flexibility alone wasn’t enough; the boat needed strength. He reinforced the hull with hardwood, giving it the backbone it needed to handle the water and weight. After waterproofing and painting the hull, he added the upper parts of the boat, again using no modern screws—just ancient carpentry methods.
When it came time to install the engine, things got even more serious. He made precise cuts in the hull for the engine’s shaft and rotor. He opted for two 30-horsepower diesel engines, ensuring the boat would have enough power to handle the water with ease.
After a final coat of paint, the boat was ready. The whole village turned out to witness the launch, and with a roar of the engines, the boat glided smoothly across the water, a testament to his hard work and dedication.
