According to the United States Citizenship & Immigration Service, only 40% of eligible immigrants in the New York City metro area have applied for naturalization. Many lawful permanent residents face obstacles to applying for naturalization, such as the required fees, strict English language requirements, as well as criminal, medical or overseas travel issues. Many eligible immigrants do not know that they qualify for fee waivers, English language exceptions, and medical disability waivers. Citizenship provides immigrants with many benefits, such as voting rights, expanded opportunity to petition for foreign relatives within the United States and abroad, as well as access to medical and other benefits available to low-income individuals.
