Welcome to Thriving Rockstar, a weekly podcast where we have broad conversations with seasoned artists on topics ranging from health, relationships and lifestyle to social media and entrepreneurship.
I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally be launching this podcast! This show was launched with the intention of seeking to distill what it takes to live a healthy, balanced and meaningful life as an artist, while taking advantage of the abundant opportunities for entrepreneurship in the modern age.
Today’s guest is Neal Morse, a multi-instrumentalist prog rock composer and songwriter. I’ve been a fan of Neal for years… Neal is one of the more recognized artists within the modern progressive rock sphere. He first became known in prog through Spocks Beard, a band he formed in the 90’s with his brother, Alan. He then formed a supergroup named Transatlantic with Former Dream Theater co-founder Mike Portnoy, Flower Kings’ Roine Stolt, and Marillion’s Pete Trewavas. Portnoy also played on most of Neal’s other projects, including the latest one, The Neal Morse Band—In which he partners with Mike Portnoy on the drums, Randy George on the bass, Bill Hubauer on keys and Eric Gillete on Guitar. They just released their third record, The Great Adventure, a sequel to their previous “similitude of a dream” which received much critical acclaim.
I got the pleasure chat with Neal on personal topics ranging from his relationship with his family and how he keeps up with them while touring, to how he maintains his health with the challenges of regulating diet, exercise and sleep on the road. We also got to discuss how his faith informs every aspect of what he does.
Neal recently launched an app called Waterfall, where he offers he offers all the music he has released with different projects over time, along with rare demos and such for a subscription fee. Aside from some teasers, he decided to not put his music on Apple, Spotify and the other streaming services and is taking an interesting stance against all that.
