This is an animation I did quite a few months ago, in April, I believe! These are the two main characters from my story "Shattered Stars", who are best friends. I did have a shorts version, but personally I prefer long form XD
LORE / STORY SHOWN:
Very shorthand version, but basically, Lain (on the right) and Zak (on the left) have grown up together as best friends since they were small, they both practically spent every day together exploring. Over the years, Lain developed a crush on Zak, but never told him, since he knew Zak couldn't love him back. Zak kinda of viewed Lain as a "brother" when he was younger (or basically like family, closer than friends), then as "someone close he could trust" as he grew older. Lain knew about this, and was obviously very uncomfortable, and knew it would be best to never share his feelings. Lain viewed Zak as a best friends, not as a brother dynamic.
This did lead to Lain being very "I-will-sacrifice-anything-to-ensure-Zak-is-happy-and-safe" mindset, even at the cost of his own wellbeing (IE later in the story he makes a deal with a god to keep Zak safe). Zak will never know what Lain had to do and sacrifice, such as his happiness, for not telling Zak.
This scene is what Lain thought of just before he died, and how he imagined the conversation would go if he confessed his crush on Zak. Zak would probably turn away, feeling betrayed and leave him alone, so Lain will die knowing he never told his friend, and if he did, he would probably ruin their friendship forever, as he knows Zak is straight and never thought of him that way.
