The 4K for Cancer is a program of the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. Katrina Farrell is a junior at the University of Arizona. In the summer of 2014 she is riding with a group of college students on a 70 day, 4000 mile bike ride from Baltimore to Portland.
As an undergraduate pursuing a career in medicine, my most immediate connection to the cancer community is my activity in cancer research. Being on this side of the cancer community has inspired me to become active in spreading the knowledge I have about not only cancer treatment, but cancer prevention. However, I have not been a stranger to the people in the cancer community, having known multiple patients and affected friends and families. As more time passes, I realize how important it is to be a bridge between both sides of the cancer community.
As time has progressed, and cancer has become more prevalent, it's not a stretch to say that most people can be considered members of the "cancer community." This ride will help me put back into the community a small fraction of what I, as well as my loved ones, have taken out. I'm excited to take advantage of my enthusiasm for biking and travel to do something beyond self-betterment.
