When DeMarcus Cousins decided to join the defending champion Golden State Warriors.. The NBA World was sent into shock, Warriors haters and fans alike, we all had questions. How did this happen? Was it the infamous achilles injury that led him to be too much of a risk for other franchises? Or the fact that most teams don’t have the culture to sustain his hot-headed nature and potentially chemistry crushing persona. Or even the fact that the Warriors are simply so good that they were easily the first option to call when the offers weren’t coming in as expected. In each potential factor described, it is a classic case of the rich being perfectly positioned to get even richer. However, there is one other thing that has yet to really be given the respect it deserves as a huge contributing factor to this team's overall success over the past few years. A factor that is rarely even brought up or discussed in general. What many may not know is that this move has been in the making for a long time. Now by all means I’m not sayin that the Warriors are so “light years ahead” of the rest of the league, as owner Joe Lacob likes to put it, that they’ve had this move planned out from before KD was even brought on. On the contrary, this was Boogie’s chess move. This was his response, his retribution, really, to being shunned from teams all around the league. Being low-balled by his previous home he’d hoped to return to. All while he is.. when healthy.. by far the greatest player on the free agent market this off-season not named LeBron James. New Orleans then turned around to sign Julius Randle before a deal was even close to being in place with Cousins, making it pretty clear that they didn’t have much faith in him moving forward past this recovery phase. And more than that, really, this was revenge not just against the Pelicans or teams around the league unsure about his future this very offseason. But probably a lashing out in response to the unfortunate position he was drafted and forced into entering the league, 7 years trapped in a losing situation and terrible culture on the Kings. Then after finally being relieved of that situation, he went on only to suffer one of the worst injuries in all of sports, and never even get a full season to experiment with that roster, or even a simple taste of postseason action, something Boogie has been yearning for his entire career. But for both KD & Cousins, there’s a backstory to the backstory, there’s a greater influence at play here than simply chasing a ring that led to both players decisions. We’ve all heard the story of Draymond calling KD in the parking lot after the Warriors Game 7 loss to the Cavs in 2016, but something else was brewing that summer – and it was in Rio de Janeiro.
