Ama & Ise Jingu Special Program - Learning About the Relationship Between Gods & Nature
Ama are female free diving fishermen who make a living by catching abalone, turban shells and seaweed. It’s a great way to fish. Sustainability and continuity have great meaning, as such many conventions have been set in order to protect the resources that we are targeting to “not catch too much” and prevent the resources from running out.
Ama huts are huts where Ama prepare to go fishing, light fire to warm themselves after fishing and rest their tired bodies. It is an indispensable place for Ama fishers.
Shinsen is a meal offered to the Gods and for about 1,500 years, Ise Jingu has served meals twice a day of salt, bonito flakes, kelp etc. to Amaterasu Omikami (Japanese Sun goddess) in the morning and the evening, without missing a single day. In addition to offerings prayers, special meals are offered at festivals such as the Thanksgiving Festival for bountiful harvests.
