The Hotter and Gayer Narrative in Ceramics with Matthew Limb
A recording of the August 24 virtual discussion on The Hotter and Gayer Narrative in Ceramics, with scholar Matthew Limb and co-curators Beth Ann Gerstein and Pam Aliaga. “The Hotter and Gayer Narrative in Ceramics” furthers the dialogue on queer ceramics history and delves deeper into Making in Between: Queer Clay, the second exhibition in AMOCA’s “Making in Between” series. Matthew Limb wrote the introductory essay for the Queer Clay catalog, defining identity in ceramics and explaining how it fundamentally evades the limitations of categorization. Through this Zoom event, Matthew Limb explores how queer identity plays a role in the clay community.
Matthew Limb is an emerging scholar of twentieth and twenty-first century American craft and design from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His dissertation Inherit the Earth: Ceramics, Land Use, and Settler Colonialism in the American West, 1923-1994 is an ecocritical view of ceramic artists’ engagement with the desert landscapes of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. He is a past recipient of the Douglass Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the American Council of Learned Societies/Henry Luce Foundation Dissertation Fellowship in American Art, the Center for Craft Research Grant, and a Decorative Arts Trust Grant.
