This camel is not from Rajasthan. It is called Bactrian Camel from Hunder in Nubra Valley of Ladakh.
Nubra Valley, Diskit Monastery, Maitreyee Buddha, Hunder sand dunes and cold desert and Bactrian camels or duble hump camples.
This is one of the most interesting segments of our Mega Ladakh series. The scenic beauty of Diskit Monastery and Maitreyee Buddha is out of this world. Thus Nubra Valley, a valley next to the Shayok river, is so full of beautiful terrain that it never disappoints you. Once we complete our visit to Diskit Monastery, we would head out to Hunder which is famous for it's cold desert and sand dunes and the bactrian camels. These camels which are specific to this region or Ladakh is different from the single hump camels of Thar desert. They can withstand extreme temperatures and can carry immensely heavy payload. During 1870 when the trade route was open from central Asia and China to India through Ladakh, these double hump camels or bactrian camels were used to carry the payload may it be pashmina, spices, dry fruit or any other precious product. Later as the borders closed, the last batch of these camels stayed back.
Now the number of backtrian camels in nubra valley is more than 250 and counting. You can do desert safari for a nominal cost of 350/- per person for 30 minutes.
