Plot (MAJOR SPOILER WARNING): It’s All Hallow’s Eve and the spirits of those who died in the Forest make an unexpected brief return to talk to the tributes. Arya and Mary-Lu catch up with some of their friends, who are pleased to see they’re a couple. One ghost, the very first person to sacrifice themselves, introduces himself as Adam and shares how the ritual between the Forest and Thornwaithe came to be (full story here: • Adam's Story ).
Meanwhile, the Forest Spirit senses someone at the wood’s edge - Maria. He refuses her offer to exchange places with Mary-Lu as he doesn’t want to break the pact. Her pleas move him, however, as she reminds him of Adam and why he gave his life in the first place. He grants her one wish, and asks what it is…
Meanwhile Arya isn’t moved by Adam’s story, saying both the Forest and Thornwaithe are to blame for the senseless deaths. As the sun rises and the ghosts disappear, Thrynn is suddenly possessed by the ghost of Frost Star, the fairy Arya killed prior. She pulls out a knife and before anyone can stop her, she attacks Arya. The shock of possessing Thrynn kills him as well. Mary-Lu holds on to Arya, crying as she dies.
Back at the Forest entrance, Maria urges the Spirit to consider sparing Mary-Lu as she knows she’s good at heart. But Arya’s death has broken Mary-Lu, and she vows to burn both the Forest and Thornwaithe to the ground.
