ATTENTION! The explanation of what a network mask is is overly simplified in this video. The focus is on understanding that there's a part of the address that identifies the network and another part that identifies the host. Network masks were initially defined based on the IP address class scheme (Classes A, B, C, D, and E). The network masks 255.0.0.0, 255.255.0.0, and 255.255.255.0.0 define the ranges of classes A, B, and C, dividing the IP address into network and host addresses exactly in each octet, without "breaking" the octet in half – either further to the left or further to the right.
