A simple botanical illustration of a new orchid species from Southeast Asia is captured by stop-motion to show the stages involved, from placement of the various components, to their sketching by pencil, subsequent ink outline, and finally filling-in to provide depth.
When describing a new species in a scientific paper, it is important that key features of the organism are illustrated, in addition to a general representation of the organism as a whole. Whilst this can be achieved in the modern age by photography, technical line drawings remain the most important means of clearly isolating the most significant features.
