The Native Americans could be ruthless when dealing with white settlers who they saw as invaders in their land. The tortures they employed were horrific but when compared to the various tortures devised by European countries they could not hold a candle to them.
From these reports and many others its not hard to understand why the rest of America called it the wild west.
