Anyone who wants less weeds in the garden would do well to place plants in such a way that the soil becomes compacted and weeds no longer stand a chance. However, plants do not grow as fast as you would like, and in the case of new plantings, the first weeds will germinate within 10 days. Under newly planted hedges, in young borders, and on pathways, you can then apply a thick layer of wood chips to temporarily suppress the weeds.
Wood chips have a number of advantages:
It gives your garden a warm and natural look;
It suppresses weed growth; you need to weed and hoe less often;
It retains water better in the soil and thus protects against drying out; you need to water less often;
It protects the soil against erosion and frost and stimulates soil life;
It is environmentally friendly, provided the wood chips come from untreated wood that is not felled specifically for this purpose, but is released during the maintenance of public spaces;
It is relatively inexpensive; - It attracts birds to your garden.
There are also a few disadvantages:
If the wood chips dry out, you must be careful with fire; they can be a fire hazard;
Wood chips decompose, so it is a temporary solution. In open areas, you will need to apply a new layer after a year or two;
Birds love critters living among the wood chips, but they can also make a mess while searching for food. If you do not like that, it is better not to apply wood chips next to your lawn or paved garden paths;
due to the decomposition of wood chips, the soil acidifies slightly; for lime-loving plants, it is better to choose a different mulch layer.
