STORYLINE:

Afghanistan's interim Prime Minister Hamid Karzai entered Kandahar on Wednesday, occupying the abandoned headquarters of Mullah Omar, the Taliban supreme leader.

The building was surrendered by the Taliban on Friday (7th October).

Karzai has given responsibility for the defence and security of the city to former Taliban leader Mullah Najibullah, who defected to the Northern Alliance.

The U-S-led military campaign in Afghanistan is narrowing its focus to two final targets: Mullah Omar and Osama bin Laden and his top deputies.

The commander of Afghanistan's Northern Alliance forces believes Omar is hiding in the Kandahar region, close to the border with Pakistan.

Bin Laden is believed to be on the run in the Tora Bora cave complex near Jalalabad.
