On the 26th September 2014, 43 Mexican students disappeared from a Teachers' College after being forcibly abducted in Iguala, Mexico.
The teachers college was a left wing all-male school closely involved with student activism. the students would regularly participate in protests. The day they vanished, 100 students travelled to the nearby town
They were intending to hijack some buses to protest in Mexico city which was quite common. They were protesting against discriminatory hiring practices for teachers.
On the 26th September at around 6pm the 100 students headed to iguala. they commandeered some of the buses and at 9pm they tried to drive out of the city.
However, police blocked them from doing this.
Some students managed to escape while police opened fire on the buses. students tried to fight back by throwing rocks at police.
Police also mistakenly fired at a bus carrying a football team, killing 2 people. A woman travelling in a nearby taxi was killed by a stray bullet.
Three students were also killed in the gunfire. The body of the third was found the next morning. he had been violently tortured.
Forty-three of the students were reported missing after the clash with police.
Eyewitnesses saw groups of the students being rounded up by police and driven off. In total, 43 students completely vanished and noone would hear from them again.
