Most car companies solve problems the normal way.
Fuel economy slipping? Add a turbo.
Emissions rules tightening? Add a hybrid system.
Engine too thirsty? Chop off a couple of cylinders and call it “eco”.
So Sensible. Predictable. and Boring.
But Then there’s Mazda.
Mazda looks at a perfectly serviceable four-stroke engine — an invention that has worked flawlessly since the late 1800s — and says, “Right. What if we made it twice as complicated and gave it two extra strokes?”
