Calling the IRS what you need to know
When phoning the IRS, taxpayers and tax professionals will be required to authenticate their identity.
This is part of the agency’s ongoing endeavor to protect taxpayer information from identity theft.
Before calling, go to IRS.gov
or log in to your online account to access useful information and get quicker answers to your tax questions.
If you call, have your personal information or someone you have authorized to speak on your behalf available.
Before speaking with an agent, have the following information on hand:
*Social Security numbers (SSN) and birth dates for those who were named on the tax return
*An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) if you do not have an SSN
*Your filing status: single, head of household, married filing joint or married filing separate
*The prior-year tax return. The customer service agent may need to verify your identity with information from the return before answering certain questions
*A copy of the tax return in question
*Any letters or notices you received from the IRS
The IRS customer service professional is required by law to speak solely with you
or your approved designated representative.
You should have the following information before calling concerning a third-party:
*Verbal or written authorization from the third-party to discuss the account
*The ability to verify the taxpayer's name, SSN or ITIN, tax period, and tax forms filed
*Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) or PIN if a third-party designee
One of these forms, must be current, completed and signed:
*Form 8821, Tax Information Authorization
*Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative
