The Illidari is a general name used both to refer to the unified army under Illidan Stormrage in Outland, and to a specific, smaller order, the main component of which are demon hunters. Various sources indicate that the Illidari included night elves, blood elves, naga, broken, fel orcs, and various demons. There were also groups considered allies of the Illidari, although they did not belong to this faction. The Illidari even conducted operations in Azeroth, but primarily operated in Outland. At the height of their power, there were very few places throughout the shattered world where Illidari or their allies were not active.
When the Alliance and Horde entered Outland through the Dark Portal, reopened by the servants of the Burning Legion, the Illidari became one of their primary adversaries. Unbeknownst to the two factions, Illidan and the demon hunters had played a direct role in the initial battles against the demons, saving the Alliance and Horde forces from defeat. However, they had reason to view Illidan's servants with suspicion and hatred: in virtually every location in Outland, there were innocents who had suffered at the hands of the Illidari in one way or another. Although Illidan's true goal was the defeat of the Burning Legion, he employed methods that appeared dubious to outsiders, including the creation of fel orcs, the summoning of demons, the collection of ancient relics, and the invasion of Auchindoun.
These conflicts led to the Siege of the Black Temple, which united not only the Alliance and Horde but also the naaru-serving inhabitants of Shattrath. A significant number of Illidari were destroyed during the siege, but several forces remained on Mardum at the time, attempting to retrieve the Sargerite Keystone. Akama, Maiev Shadowsong, and heroes of both factions contributed to Illidan's death. When the demon hunters returned from Mardum to defend the Black Temple, they discovered the war was already lost and were captured by the Wardens. Like the surviving Illidari, they were placed in the Vault of the Wardens, where they spent the following years.
However, several Illidari forces, including shivarra, Ashtongue, and naga, maintained control of Mardum and the Felhammer, a massive Legion ship captured during the operation. When a new demonic invasion began on Azeroth through the Broken Isles, Maiev Shadowsong decided to free the demon hunters, realizing that this was the only way to hold back the Legion's forces. The hunters were freed, became allies of the Alliance and Horde, and were able to contact the remaining forces on Mardum. Felhammer became a new stronghold where the remaining Illidari gathered. From here, the new leader of the order, who had taken over in Illidan's absence, oversaw operations on the Broken Isles and attempted to continue the plan to destroy the Legion, which had been devised back in Outland. Illidan, his soul trapped in the Twisting Nether and his body possessed by demons, was able to contact the Illidari and give them instructions.
