What are Appositives? What are Appositive Phrases?
An appositive is a noun or pronoun placed beside another noun or pronoun to identify or describe it.
EXAMPLE: Both Chelsea and Frank are part of the skateboard crew
Sk8mafia.
EXPLANATION: The noun Sk8mafia identifies the noun crew.
Usually, an appositive is set off from the rest of a sentence by commas.
EXAMPLE: Tess, did you know that he, Oscar, won the race?
EXPLANATION: The noun Oscar identifies the pronoun he.
An appositive usually follows the word it identifies or explains.
For emphasis, however, an appositive may come at the beginning of a sentence.
When an appositive is followed by an adjective, adverb, or prepositional phrase, it is called an appositive phrase.
EXAMPLE: I went to see E.T., a popular movie in the early 80’s.
EXPLANATION: "a popular movie in the early 80’s" is an adjective phrase.
