It was the perfect example of how two countries could coexist with respect, cooperation, and mutual trust. But that image is changing. In this documentary video, I show you what the non-existent border between the US and Canada is really like, why it's no longer as easy as it once was, and how it's quietly transforming before the eyes of the world.
In places like Peace Arch Park, between Vancouver (Canada) and Washington (USA), families used to meet halfway along the border without going through customs or checkpoints. Only a line in the grass divided the two countries. But today, these spaces are more controlled than ever: new cameras, hidden sensors, surveillance drones, and border patrols have become part of a reality that once seemed unnecessary. The dream of an invisible border is beginning to fade.
The Canada-United States border measures more than 8,800 kilometers, making it the longest in the world. It crosses lakes, mountains, national parks, and small communities where a house can literally be in Canada and its backyard in the United States. For decades, people crossed freely to visit family, work, or shop in the neighboring country. However, in recent years, especially after the pandemic and the increase in irregular migration, controls have tightened. What was once a symbol of friendship now feels like a guarded space.
In this documentary, you will travel with me to the most curious, forgotten, and symbolic points of this almost invisible border. You will see towns like Stanstead (Canada) and Derby Line (USA), where the public library is divided by the border: one side belongs to one country, the other to the neighboring one.
