Der Film stellt das Forschungszentrum der Berliner Mathematik MATH+ vor. Darüber hinaus beschreiben junge MATH+ Wissenschaftler*innen, für was MATH+ steht und an welchen Forschungsprojekten sie arbeiten.
Das Forschungszentrum der Berliner Mathematik MATH+ betreibt anwendungsgetriebene mathematische Forschung mit gesellschaftlicher Relevanz. Es ist ein institutionenübergreifendes und interdisziplinäres Exzellenzcluster, d. h. hier forschen Mathematiker*innen gemeinsam mit Kolleg*innen aus verschiedenen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen und Einrichtungen. An MATH+ beteiligt sind die drei großen Berliner Universitäten, FU, HU und TU Berlin, sowie das Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik (WIAS) und das Zuse-Institut Berlin (ZIB).
MATH+ hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, neue Ansätze in der anwendungsorientierten Mathematik zu erforschen und weiterzuentwickeln. Mehr als 500 Wissenschaftler*innen arbeiten in über 100 Forschungsprojekten zusammen. Es werden neue Ansätze für anwendungsorientierte Mathematik mit Schwerpunkt in datengetriebener Modellierung, Simulation, Optimierung erforscht. Hierbei geht es auch um die Eröffnung neuer Denkräume. Im Mittelpunkt stehen mathematische Grundlagen für die Nutzung immer größerer Datenmengen in den Lebens- und Materialwissenschaften, in der Energie- und Netzwerkforschung sowie in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften.
Die Themenfelder erstrecken sich dabei vom Medikamentendesign zur Herstellung nicht-abhängig machender Schmerzmittel über die Batterieforschung (für beispielsweise längere Haltbarkeit von Akkus) und die Energieversorgung zum Klimawandel oder zur Nachhaltigkeitsforschung im Bereich Mobilität und E-Autos. Aber auch in geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Projekten forschen Mathematiker*innen gemeinsam mit ihren Kolleg*innen, z.B. an Modellierungen zur Altertumsforschung oder zu sozialen Dynamiken wie der Verbreitung von Meinungen und der Ausbreitung von Krankheiten.
Neben den Fortschritten in der Mathematik selbst und ihren Anwendungen ist zudem die Ausbildung und Förderung von jungen Wissenschaftler*innen sehr wichtig. Das ist Aufgabe der Berlin Mathematical School (BMS), der Graduiertenschule von MATH+ (www.math-berlin.de), die sich der exzellenten Nachwuchsausbildung in der gesamten mathematischen Breite widmet.

The short film introduces the Berlin Mathematics Research Center MATH+. In addition, young MATH+ scientists describe what MATH+ stands for and which research projects they are working on.
MATH+ conducts application-driven mathematical research with social relevance. It is a cross-institutional and interdisciplinary cluster of excellence, i.e., mathematicians are working on research projects together with colleagues from various scientific disciplines and institutions. MATH+ is a joint project of the three major universities in Berlin – Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin – as well as the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) and the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB).
More than 500 scientists are collaborating on over 100 research projects. New approaches are explored for application-oriented mathematics concentrating on data-driven modeling, simulation, and optimization. This also involves opening up completely new spaces of thought. The focus is on mathematical foundations to make use of the ever-increasing amounts of data in the life and material sciences, energy and network research, and humanities and social sciences.
The topics range from drug design for producing non-addictive painkillers, to battery research for longer battery life and to energy supply, climate change, or sustainability research in the fields of mobility and e-cars. Mathematicians also team up with their fellow scientists in humanities and social science projects to work together, for example, on modeling for archeological research or social dynamics, such as the dissemination of opinions or the spread of diseases.
In addition to the advances in mathematics itself and its applications, the training and promotion of young scientists are also essential. This is the mission of the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS), the graduate school of MATH+ (www.math-berlin.de), which provides excellent training for young scientists across the entire mathematical spectrum.
