Scott Joplin - Solace
About a year ago I watched a little film (or "fluff piece" as my ex-manager put it--much to my bewildered chagrin) starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford titled The Sting. After watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid multiple times I knew that another work with this iconic duo was worth watching for the dapper faces alone. I was tickled to discover that all the music was renditions of Scott Joplin tunes and--much like audiences of the 1970s--I found myself going out of my way to listen to some early 20th century ragtime; though in this 21st century climate I spent more time streaming the soundtrack from spotify rather than going out and buying a record :)
This tune in particular affected me strongly...I actually learned it in reverse order. I instantly fell in love with the final section and pulled up imslp on my iPad as quick as I could. As I listened to various recordings and renditions of the piece I began craving the second section more and more, but still generally rolling my eyes at the "cheesiness" of the opening melodies. After a few months, I realized that the entire piece is beautiful from front to finish, and I may as well learn the whole damned thing.
A couple flubs here and there, but I'm overall happy with the end result.
