The structure of the Medvezhy Ruchey quarry, the Zapolyarny mine, and Norilsk
This is the Medvezhy Ruchey quarry in Norilsk. One of the first sites where nickel ore was mined in the Taimyr Peninsula in the mid-20th century. It's a man-made "pit" 400 meters deep, 1,300 meters wide, and the quarry field is about 3 kilometers long.
On the day of our arrival, everything was quiet. Work had been halted as planned before blasting operations. All equipment had been moved to a safe distance. No other people or vehicles remained below. Everyone watched from the observation deck as 200,000 cubic meters of rock were uncovered.
