This tip will instantly improve your lacrosse stick protection when facing your defender.
I think offensive players or players in general we talk a lot about stick skills and passing and shooting but I think this is really overlooked. I'm going to give you a real easy way to think about it.
In terms of the one-hand cradle often times an offensive player tends to go into the one hand too often or at the wrong times. Let's talk stick protection. If have the ball and we're playing basketball and I give someone the basketball and your'e the defender so I"m facing you, everyone pretty much turns to the side and dribbles.
We have that picture in our head of hip hip ball. So in lacrosse stick protection is easy. So if you're the defender and you're looking at me this way and my stick is in front you can smack it or do a lot of things. But we want to always be shoulder/shoulder/stick.
I see players saying that but I don't see enough players doing it. Shoulder/Shoulder/Stick at all times. In other video we talked about the power cradle which would be just running up field when we don't have a defender on us. Then there's the shooting cradle as we're stepping into shoot or pass or we're in that triple threat position.
The one-handed cradle is great when your'e under pressure and you really can't get the ball off so you just want to buy space and protect the ball.
Your hand is going to be all the way towards the top of the stick about 3 to 4 inches down and it's going to be shoulder/shoulder/stick. As you can see my elbows are at a 90 degree angle. This way I can get my lacrosse stick up and down and vertical to the ground.
That's great for protection. If I have it up and down you can't see it. If I lay it down and start doing weird stuff, it's moving too much, the defender can get a piece of it.
We want it up and down shoulder/shoulder/stick and we're just going to buy room, protect it , stop and go and get open. When we are talking about any cradle, no matter what we're doing, if there's a defender on us and there's some sort of pressure, which obviously if we're passing and turning it through, the lacrosse stick should be always be shoulder/shoulder/stick.
