Technology use among young people is growing increasingly ubiquitous and a key part of their lives. Recent estimates suggest that teenagers spend an average of 30 hours in front of screens each week. At the same time, mental health problems and psychological distress are increasing in young people, from 26% to 40% over the past two decades. A common narrative is that technology use is a key driver of the youth mental health crisis. However, the reality is that the science and knowledge to definitively understand the effects of technology use on young people’s mental health is lacking. Understanding this issue is one of the biggest and most critical challenges in addressing mental health and wellbeing.
