Shaft alignment practitioners need to understand the concept of bearing clearances. Bearing internal clearance is the total distance through which one bearing race can be moved relative to the other in the radial direction or in the axial direction. The clearances can result in both radial and axial shaft movement. Excessive shaft movements can adversely affect the repeatability of alignment measurements.
