So I did end up shading it! It took FOREVER but I wanted to make something that actually felt finished. In the end, I like how it turned out! The only issue I have is the panning; it looks choppy because of the low frame rate (8 frames per second) in comparison to the smooth panning of the background.
I have a headcanon that Ashfur wasn't in his right mind, and upon his death, his spirit was healed mentally (since every StarClan cat gains wisdom as a spirit), and that's why he was accepted into StarClan. He was no longer the same villainous cat; he was horrified with what he did. Otherwise, it just doesn't make sense for StarClan to accept him.
Edit: Seems canon took a different direction with it, which I think is ultimately better anyway.
