Kdenlive is a free video editor and open source. When it works it's pretty good for free software, and other paid software like Vegas or After Effects don't really have reasonable non-commercial licenses. If you're going to try Kdenlive be noted that at times it can be incredibly buggy. For example if you close a sequence tab from view and perform "Project Cleanup", it will dereference everything (and delete all effects) on clips using that sequence. So you can't ever remove a view of a sequence since the project cleanup action is performed automatically by the program by certain actions.
