This is an homemade game based on Alex Kidd. I made it for fun on Amstrad CPC in 1991 in BASIC 1.1 language, as a tribute to "Alex Kidd in miracle world" on Sega Master System, a game I was fond of in the early 90s. This shows Alex Kidd Rock-paper-scissors (Jankenpon) sequence and custom intro screen.
This program is a perfect example of what can do the SYMBOL command and the special character 22.
SYMBOL redefines the 8x8 pixels of any glyph character 32-255.
PRINT CHR$(22);CHR$(1) switches to transparent mode text print. Overlapping text characters in different colors but at the same position makes it possible to display 8x8 multicolored characters, (like sprites but without being actually sprites).
1️⃣🔷 0:47 🔷 Phase 1: An introduction screen, with background landscape, mountain and sky being painted with sound effects. You play as Alex Kidd and your goal is to challenge your opponent to the game of Rock-paper-scissors (Jankenpon). You control the joystick: with the directions you can change Rock, Paper, Scissors and select with Fire button. However unfortunately (if I remember correctly) the choice made by your opponent is random...
2️⃣🔷 1:28 🔷 Phase 2: No background here but Alex Kidd and his opponents are better drawn and animated (yet still using the transparent character 22 and font characters redefinition as only graphic trick). This game phase is more focused on the core game design itself. Indeed, your opponent will look at your current choice and will adapt and change a little before the time runs out, to prevent you from winning. So the mind game is to anticipate this, and to also change at the very end, depending on what your enemy selects, because if you stay still, you'll lose. Your opponent won't always act the same way so you'll also sometimes have to revise and adjust your pick.
⏹⏹ These were my early days involving programming and I enjoyed practicing BASIC on my CPC!

💌 Special thanks to Laurent "hinac" De Rammelaere who made this possible by owning a CPC in working condition and by dumping my contents to ROM files straightaway! 15 minutes later The disks could not be read.
💌 Also special thanks to "AMSTRAD Cent Pour Cent" magazine for providing so great learning courses about BASIC and ASSEMBLY languages!
